Bullpen Debuts Steal the Show in Jays Win

Ernie Clement drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth as Toronto beat Boston 5-3 on Tuesday, with Dylan Cease allowing three runs and five hits, both homers, over five innings while pushing his AL-leading strikeout total to 191. Chase Lee picked up his first big-league win and Spencer Miles logged his first career save, giving the Jays two relief debuts in decision roles in the same night.

Cease's homer trouble matters less than the bullpen validating itself with real innings when the game was still in doubt. Whether Lee and Miles become recurring options or one-night answers is worth tracking as the wild-card math tightens through August.

The Rest of the Slate
National Bank Open
Elena Rybakina reached the semifinals in Toronto by beating Naomi Osaka, and Coco Gauff advanced via walkover after Belinda Bencic withdrew from their quarterfinal with a hip injury. A walkover gets Gauff to the semifinal round, but it leaves her without match rhythm against a Rybakina who has now beaten two ranked opponents this week.
National Bank Open
Ben Shelton dispatched Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1 to reach the Montreal semifinals, while Rafael Jodar beat Arthur Fils to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal. Brandon Nakashima also advanced past Luciano Darderi, giving the men's draw three semifinalists still building their case for a breakthrough title.
Toronto Tempo
The Tempo signed guard Zaay Green to a developmental contract, a 25-year-old who has yet to appear in a WNBA game despite averaging 12.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists across three overseas stops. It's a bench-depth move rather than a roster overhaul, but it points to a front office still shaping the roster around this losing stretch.
The Number
2

Rotation subtractions announced for the Blue Jays in the past 24 hours Trey Yesavage needing knee surgery and Jamison Taillon landing on the injured list in the same news cycle is a pitching depth problem, not a one-off. Watch how the front office fills the back of the rotation over the next two weeks, because that response will say more about the stretch run than any single start.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Blue Jays team total over 4.5 runs tonight. José Soriano has been steady at 9-6 with a 3.24 ERA, and a lineup that just scored five off Boston's rotation carries real momentum into a matchup against Ranger Suarez.
