Cowan Powers Leafs Past Islanders For Hiller's First Win

Easton Cowan scored a goal and added an assist in the first period, and the Maple Leafs held on for a 2-1 win over the Islanders, delivering Jim Hiller his first victory behind the Toronto bench. Colton Sissons supplied the insurance goal, Anthony Stolarz made 26 saves, and Emil Heineman's third-period response was all New York could muster against Ilya Sorokin's 24-save effort on the other end.

One win settles nothing about a coaching change, but it does tell you where the club wants to generate offense. Cowan produced the entire first-period output himself, and a 20-year-old doing that early in a new coach's tenure is the kind of signal front offices watch closely before deciding who the top-six actually belongs to.

The real test isn't this result, it's whether Hiller's lineup generates that kind of first-period burst against better opponents than New York. Two games in, that sample is still too small to draw conclusions, but it's the first data worth tracking.

The Rest of the Slate
NFL
The Steelers are finalizing a trade sending cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Cowboys for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder, sources told ESPN Wednesday night. Porter has been a healthy inactive for three straight weeks, and Pittsburgh converting an unused asset into real draft capital says more about his standing in that building than any box score could.
CFL
Argonauts linebacker Adarius Pickett was named the CFL's top player for September after recording 35 tackles, two sacks and two pass breakups as Toronto won all four of its games that month. A player of the month award built on a full month of defensive dominance carries more weight than a single-game standout, and it puts Toronto's defense squarely in the conversation as the postseason approaches.
NBA
The Nuggets signed Canadian guard Ryan Nembhard to a two-way deal, a week after Charlotte waived him. A two-way slot is a modest landing spot, but it keeps the 23-year-old from Aurora, Ont. in an NBA system with a path to more.
The Number
2028

The draft year attached to Dallas's return pick for Joey Porter Jr. A second-round pick two years out is a real price for a player who hasn't taken a snap this season, which tells you the Cowboys are betting on talent over recent form. Watch how quickly Dallas gets him on the field, because the size of that pick only looks justified if he starts immediately.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Browns to keep it within a field goal at home. Pittsburgh enters already thin at cornerback after dealing away Joey Porter Jr., and a defense playing shorthanded on a short week is harder to trust than the name on the jersey suggests.
