Nylander's Five Points Outrun Colorado's Offence

William Nylander finished with two goals and a career-high three assists, tying his career high with five points in a 6-3 Maple Leafs win over the Avalanche. Easton Cowan and Nylander scored 46 seconds apart late in the second period, a stretch that gave Colorado almost no time to reset between faceoffs.

The three assists carry the analytical weight. A winger who scores twice is having a good night, but one who also sets up three more is driving the line rather than finishing it, and that distinction travels better from game to game. Colorado got two goals from Nathan MacKinnon and still lost for the first time in three home games, while Mackenzie Blackwood took his first setback of the season on 16 saves.

The cost came on defence. Chris Tanev was ruled out of the game with an upper-body injury, and Toronto won without him. How the blue line is arranged if he misses more time will decide whether this result is a template or a one-night answer.

The Rest of the Slate
MLB
Cleveland beat the White Sox 2-0 in Game 5 of the ALDS, with Gavin Williams the winning pitcher and Cade Smith earning the save, to win the series 3-2 after losing the first two games. The Guardians open the ALCS at St. Petersburg against the Rays on Monday night, carrying a series that required them to come back from an 0-2 deficit.
Formula 1
Max Verstappen won the Singapore sprint by 2.591 seconds over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, then took grand prix pole by 0.054 seconds over Charles Leclerc. George Russell crashed out of the sprint lead, which helped championship leader Kimi Antonelli gain points ahead of Sunday's race.
Toronto FC
Toronto FC beat CF Montreal 2-1 in the 401 Derby on second-half stoppage-time goals from Lewis Morgan and Djordje Mihailovic, after Daniel Rios put Montreal in front in the 52nd minute. The win halts a three-game slide and extends the unbeaten run at BMO Field since the World Cup break to five matches.

Taylor Ruck's winning time in the women's 200-metre backstroke in Tashkent The gold was the lone one in a seven-medal haul for Canada, which also collected three silver and three bronze at the second stop of the series. With the three-meet World Aquatics series now past its midpoint, the final stop is where Ruck's time will show whether Tashkent was a peak or a baseline.

The Snap Count

The Matchup
Baltimore at Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the only game in its window, kicking off at 8:20 PM ET. Every other game on the board overlaps with at least one other, so this one gets the full attention of the league and the final say on the day's conversation.

The Slate
The day opens with Philadelphia against Jacksonville at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 9:30 AM ET, then eight games start at 1:00 PM ET, including Chicago at Green Bay and Minnesota at New Orleans. Denver at the Chargers goes at 4:05 PM ET, followed by San Francisco at Seattle at 4:25 PM ET, so the afternoon tends to reward whoever is watching the right screen.
