Kirk Single Breaks Tie, Varland Locks Down Save

Alejandro Kirk's two-out single in the sixth inning broke a tie and carried the Blue Jays to a 4-3 win over the Mariners on Saturday. José Soriano struck out six over seven innings for the win, his second in three starts, while Louis Varland closed it out for his 31st save in 32 chances.

That save conversion rate is the more durable story here. A bullpen that can convert 31 of 32 chances gives a middling rotation far more margin for error than the win-loss column suggests, and it is the kind of number that quietly decides close series in September.

The Rest of the Slate
PGA Tour
Viktor Hovland made six straight putts of 7 feet or longer for a 5-under 65, taking a one-shot lead into the final round of the Tour Championship. He entered the day tied with Ryan Gerard, and the putting surge suggests Hovland is playing with more control than the leaderboard alone indicates.
Argonauts
The Argonauts were outscored 16-2 in the second half as the Saskatchewan Roughriders rallied for a 6th win of the season, with Trevor Harris throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns. A collapse of that scale in the second half points to a game-management problem that will need addressing before it costs Toronto a game with playoff stakes attached.
Toronto Tempo
The Tempo were routed 101-69 by the Phoenix Mercury, with Noemie Brochant and Shay Ciezki each scoring 15 points for Phoenix. The loss drops Toronto's roster gaps back into focus as the season winds down.
The Number
6

Consecutive putts of 7 feet or longer made by Viktor Hovland in his third round That kind of streak from mid-range is not luck, it is a putter finding a stroke at the exact moment the field tightens. Watch Hovland's putter early in the final round; if the touch carries over the first six holes, the Tour Championship is his to lose.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Mariners team total over 3.5 runs. Logan Gilbert draws a Blue Jays lineup the day after Toronto's bullpen closed out a one-run win, while Toronto's scheduled starter carries a 7.02 ERA into the outing.

“A bullpen that converts 31 of 32 saves buys a rotation more forgiveness than it deserves”
