Scherzer Draws Nola In Philadelphia Test

The Blue Jays are scheduled to open tonight's game at Citizens Bank Park with Max Scherzer as the probable starter against Aaron Nola for the Phillies at 6:05 PM ET. Toronto sits below .500 in the weeks since the deadline sell-off, and a veteran arm finding his form matters more for evaluation purposes than it does for the standings at this point in the season.

Watch Scherzer's pitch efficiency through five innings rather than the final line. A rebuilding club learns more from how a 40-something starter manages fatigue against a lineup like Philadelphia's than from any single box score, and that's the actual audition happening tonight.

The Rest of the Slate
Tennis
The National Bank Open reaches the Round of 16 at Sobeys Stadium today with sessions at 12:30 PM ET and 7:00 PM ET. Toronto's home tournament is now deep enough into the draw that seed casualties start shaping the storyline as much as star performances.
CFL
The BC Lions host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats today at 4:00 PM ET at BC Place, a non-Toronto matchup with real bearing on the East-West standings picture the Argonauts will eventually have to navigate. A Hamilton loss would widen the gap in a division Toronto is currently trying to climb.
CPL
Atlético Ottawa hosts Halifax Wanderers FC at 1:00 PM ET at TD Place, part of a full Canadian soccer slate that also includes Pacific FC and Cavalry action out west. None of it touches Toronto FC directly, but it's a reminder the domestic soccer calendar keeps moving even in the league's quieter stretches.
The Number
20

Games scheduled across the WNBA's second annual Rivals Week, running Aug. 8-14 A league-wide showcase built around rivalry matchups is a marketing push first and a competitive event second, but it still shapes national broadcast attention for a full week. The Tempo don't have a game in the opening slate, so watch whether the league schedules them into a marquee window later in the week, since visibility matters more than usual for a first-year franchise still building an identity.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Under 8 runs, Blue Jays at Phillies. Two probable starters with swing-and-miss track records at this stage of their careers make a lower-scoring game the more defensible side than betting on either offense to break through early.
