Brett Bateman reached base and scored three times, twice driven in by Nathan Lukes, as the Blue Jays beat the AL West-leading Rangers 7-2 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. Spencer Arrighetti picked up the win in relief despite allowing the only Texas runs over his two innings, one of seven pitchers Toronto used to close it out.
The result matters less for the final score than for what it preserves: Toronto (77-79) sits even with Houston, both 2.5 games behind the White Sox for the last wild card spot. A sweep would have dropped that gap to a near-mathematical impossibility with the calendar this short. Instead, the Jays kept a game of separation alive without needing help from anyone else.
That is the entire value of a game like this in late September. It does not move Toronto up the standings. It just keeps the door from closing on its own.
