Marner Leads All Scorers. Not in Toronto

**Mitch Marner** has shaken off his past playoff failures to lead all playoff performers with 21 points, his elite two-way game driving the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final. The franchise that traded him away — the Toronto Maple Leafs — failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the 2015–16 season, ending what was the longest active playoff streak in the NHL.

The 2026 Stanley Cup Final is set between the Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes and the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights, with Game 1 scheduled to begin June 2. The Hurricanes enter the Final with a 12-1 record in the postseason; goaltender **Frederik Andersen** carries a 1.44 GAA and enters as a frontrunner for the Conn Smythe Trophy. **Carter Hart** — who joined the Knights during the 2025-26 season — posted a .944 save percentage during the Western Conference Final. Two goaltenders, one Cup: the series shapes up as a test of whether Vegas's offensive firepower can crack the most defensively suffocating team in this postseason.

The Rest of the Slate
Blue Jays
The defending World Series champions sit at 29-31, third in the AL East. **José Berríos** has undergone Tommy John surgery with no official timeline for his return, and **Shane Bieber** remains on the 60-day injured list and is unlikely to factor into the rotation until late June — a rotation depth crisis that explains the record gap between the club's championship pedigree and its current standing.
NBA Finals
The 2026 NBA Finals tip off June 3, matching the New York Knicks against the San Antonio Spurs. **Victor Wembanyama** was named Western Conference Finals MVP after San Antonio's run through Oklahoma City, setting up a generational-talent showcase against a Knicks team whose plus-271 point differential across 14 playoff games is the highest scoring margin by any team entering the Finals in NBA history.
Toronto Tempo
The 2026 Tempo season features forty-four total regular-season games, including twenty-two home games, across four venues in Canada — the infrastructure of a franchise being built for permanence, not novelty. The Tempo host the Chicago Sky on Sunday, June 7 at Coca-Cola Coliseum, the first Commissioner's Cup home date of note for a franchise still establishing its identity in this market.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Carolina Hurricanes to win Game 1 (Tuesday, June 2) — a team that has gone 12-1 with home ice, a .928 save percentage from Andersen, and a defense that has allowed two or fewer goals in 12 of 13 games does not lose its Cup Final opener at home by accident. Slight favourite on the puck line.

“Toronto built a championship roster, lost the one who left, and is now watching him skate toward the Cup on someone else's payroll”
