Phillies Avoid Sweep As Blue Jays Fall In 12

Derek Hill's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 12th sealed a 7-6 Phillies win Sunday, erasing the go-ahead run Toronto had just manufactured on Jesús Sánchez's double-play groundout. Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs and Jesús Luzardo struck out 12 over seven innings, doing most of the damage before Toronto clawed back with a three-run eighth built on Andrés Giménez's two-run single.

The relevant failure happened in extras, not in the middle innings. Toronto had the lead and the matchups it wanted in the 12th and still let it slip, which is the part of this loss worth remembering when the bullpen usage gets scrutinized down the stretch.

The Rest of the Slate
National Bank Open
Elena Rybakina outlasted Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Coco Gauff needed just 74 minutes to beat Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1, both advancing to the quarterfinals at Sobeys Stadium. The home tournament's contender field is narrowing fast, and both are now two wins from a Toronto title.
PGA Tour
Michael Brennan closed the Wyndham Championship with five straight birdies en route to a 6-under 64, winning the PGA Tour's regular-season finale. The result locks the 24-year-old into the FedEx Cup Playoffs and a Masters invite, the kind of week that resets a career trajectory overnight.
Tennis
Leylah Fernandez was eliminated from the National Bank Open, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Naomi Osaka in the Round of 16. She was the last Canadian standing in either singles draw, which means the remaining home-market storyline at Sobeys Stadium now runs entirely through the international quarterfinalists.
The Number
30

Leylah Fernandez's seed entering the National Bank Open A 30th seed reaching the Round of 16 of a home tournament before losing to Naomi Osaka is a respectable run, not a letdown, and it says more about the state of Canadian women's tennis depth than any single result should. Watch whether Tennis Canada treats this as a floor or a ceiling heading into next season, because the difference determines whether the wildcard invites keep coming.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Red Sox on the moneyline. Toronto burned its bullpen through 12 innings Sunday, and a taxed relief corps facing Boston's lineup less than 24 hours later is the kind of spot bettors should respect.
