Raptors Secure Jamal Shead Through 2029-30

Jamal Shead has agreed to a three-year, $24 million extension with the Raptors, his agent confirmed Thursday, locking the 24-year-old guard in through the 2029-30 season. The deal arrives before training camp has produced a single preseason possession, which tells you Toronto valued cost certainty over waiting to see what camp revealed.

Extensions like this are about what they remove from the calendar rather than what they add to the roster. Shead's price is now fixed regardless of how his role expands, which matters for a front office that will eventually have to pay its younger pieces at market rate. Locking him in now, before any breakout drives the number up, is the kind of move that looks unremarkable in October and smart by the trade deadline.

It also answers a question about his standing in the rotation. Teams do not extend players they plan to trade or bury on the bench, so this is Toronto signaling Shead is part of the long-term backcourt plan, not a camp battle storyline.

The Rest of the Slate
MLB Postseason
The Braves beat the Phillies 6-2 in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series on Thursday, with three different hitters, Michael Harris II, Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson, going deep. Atlanta advances to a Division Series against the Dodgers, a far tougher pitching matchup than the one they just escaped.
NFL
The Browns beat the Steelers 27-24 on Thursday Night Football, extending Pittsburgh's offensive struggles into a fourth week. A one-score loss against a middling Cleveland team raises real questions about whether the Steelers' issues are schematic or simply personnel.

Home runs by three different Atlanta hitters in Thursday's series-clinching win A lineup that gets power from three separate bats in an elimination game is harder to shut down than one riding a single hot hitter. Watch how Atlanta's lineup balance holds up against a Dodgers rotation that will punish single-dimensional offense far more than Philadelphia did.

The pick: Hurricanes to beat the Capitals. Carolina is home at Lenovo Center to open the season, while Washington is on the road for the front half of a back-to-back, with a trip to face Tampa Bay the following night.
