The Lead

Marchenko Hat Trick Buys Leafs a 4-2 Lead, Nothing More

Kirill Marchenko scored the fifth hat trick of his career in his 300th NHL game, and the Maple Leafs still lost 5-4 when Owen Power scored in overtime for Buffalo. His third goal, at 16:51 of the second period, made it 4-2, and both Sabres goals that tied the game arrived in the third.

The mechanism had two parts. John Tavares, who had two assists, left early in the third after colliding with Josh Norris, and Dennis Gilbert and Mattias Samuelsson scored for Buffalo in that same period. Goaltending did not separate the teams: Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 26, and Auston Matthews scored. The gap came from what happened after Toronto's top-line production had already been spent.

The Leafs also acquired Aatu Räty from Vancouver, sending Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr the other way. It is a depth swap, and its value rises if the Tavares collision costs him games. His status is the number that decides whether this loss was a one-night anomaly or a lineup problem.

The Rest of the Slate
MLB Postseason
Milwaukee swept the two-time defending champion Dodgers with a 6-4 win in NLCS Game 4, with Garrett Mitchell's sixth-inning homer off Tanner Scott breaking the tie after Shohei Ohtani's first home run of this postseason helped Los Angeles build a 4-0 lead. The Brewers are the first team in MLB history to sweep the opponent that swept it the previous postseason. In the ALCS, Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 3-2 on a go-ahead two-run homer from Petey Halpin to lead the series 2-1, and Game 4 is scheduled for tonight with rain in the forecast.
NFL
Denver beat Seattle 17-14 in overtime on Thursday night, with Ja'Quan McMillian intercepting Sam Darnold and Wil Lutz then kicking a 53-yard field goal. The overtime interception is the play that will define how this game is remembered.
The Number
1982

The last season Milwaukee reached the World Series before this one A pennant drought that long makes the manner of the sweep matter: the Brewers beat a Dodgers team that had swept them a year earlier. With Cleveland leading the ALCS 2-1, Game 4 tonight decides whether Milwaukee's opponent is set up by a Guardians lead or a Rays rebuttal, and the rain forecast could shift the pitching plans on both sides.
