Argonauts Survive Five Turnovers To Beat Calgary

The Toronto Argonauts beat the Calgary Stampeders 33-30 at BMO Field on Thursday, absorbing five turnovers and still finding a game-winning field goal set up by a late catch from Damonte Coxie off a throw from Chad Kelly. It snaps a stretch in which Calgary had won four of the last five meetings between these clubs, including a 58-36 blowout back in Week 5.

A win with five turnovers is a process problem wearing an outcome's clothes. Toronto should enjoy the two points, but the turnover margin is the number that travels with this team into next week, not the final score.

The Rest of the Slate
Tennis
Aryna Sabalenka advanced in straight sets over Shuai Zhang at Sobeys Stadium on Thursday, extending her hard-court run at the National Bank Open. Iga Swiatek also advanced, beating Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 to reach the fourth round, a useful early gauge of her form on home-soil hard courts ahead of the North American swing.
Blue Jays
Toronto is scheduled to open a series at Philadelphia tonight at 6:40 PM ET, its first look at a National League opponent since the trade deadline reshaped the roster. The question now isn't what the front office added, it's whether the retooled group gels before the schedule tightens in September.
NFL Preseason
The Carolina Panthers beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-30 in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game, with the rookie quarterback rushing in from 5 yards out on the final play. It's one preseason snap count, but a rookie closing a game like that is exactly the kind of moment teams build depth charts around.
The Number

Total assets Toronto sent the Clippers for Kawhi Leonard Two players, two future first-round picks, a first-round swap, and two second-rounders is a lot of long-term value tied to an outcome the Raptors can't control. Watch the NBA's investigation timeline closely, because if it drags into training camp, Toronto may need to decide how much of that future it's willing to keep betting before the arbitration ever resolves.

Top Dog — Betting Angle

The pick: Aryna Sabalenka to continue her run at Sobeys Stadium. She beat Shuai Zhang in straight sets in the third round on Thursday, and her hard-court form has carried through the tournament so far heading into the Round of 16.
